What you'll learn
Develop a publication from supplied content through to a finished, reusable document. You’ll establish its layout and style structure, manage changing text, organise tables and graphics, and add navigation. Practise a small data-merge task alongside the main project. By the end, you’ll be able to handle revisions more efficiently, maintain consistency across multiple pages and prepare organised files for handover.
- 01
Build reusable document structures
Create related parent pages, manage layers and save templates. Develop layout variations that share common elements and remain straightforward to update.
- 02
Refine typography and text flow
Use baseline grids, keep options, hyphenation and paragraph controls to improve readability. Manage awkward breaks and headings that span columns.
- 03
Make styles do more of the work
Develop connected paragraph styles, character styles and nested styles. Use Find/Change and a guided introduction to simple GREP searches to clean up repetitive formatting.
- 04
Create and control tables
Import spreadsheet content and format rows, columns and cells. Apply table and cell styles, repeat header rows and manage tables that continue across pages.
- 05
Keep graphics connected to the content
Use anchored objects for images and callouts that move with text. Apply object styles and reuse assets to maintain consistent treatment throughout a publication.
- 06
Organise and navigate longer documents
Manage sections and numbering, generate a contents page from paragraph styles, and add hyperlinks and PDF bookmarks. Update navigation after content changes.
- 07
Produce variations with Data Merge
Connect a prepared spreadsheet to a simple layout to create personalised certificates, labels or information cards. Preview records and check for missing content or overflowing text.
- 08
Prepare reliable final files
Use an appropriate preflight profile to catch production problems. Review colour, images and fonts, create repeatable PDF export settings and package an organised handover.
