Revit Families & Templates Workshop

Create reusable content and a consistent project starting point.

Spend two focused days creating a practical parametric family and a starter project template. Use a simple architectural component and supplied resources to connect reusable content with everyday drawing standards.

2 days£550

Prices shown are for group classes. One-to-one training prices are agreed separately on request.

Class times: 09:30–16:30 (UK time), including a one-hour lunch break.

Assumed knowledge: Revit Beginners or equivalent experience. You should understand types and instances and be comfortable working with views, schedules and sheets. Intermediate experience is helpful.

Software: Autodesk Revit for Windows, with the Family Editor. The course version will be confirmed before training.

What you'll learn

Day 1 builds and tests a parametric cabinet family. Day 2 creates a starter project template with selected drawing standards, views and schedules. You will finish with a reusable RFA family and an RTE template to develop further for your own projects.

  1. 01

    Plan the family

Compare system, loadable and in-place families. Choose a suitable category, template and hosting approach, then define the purpose, dimensions and controls for a simple cabinet.

  2. 02

    Build the parametric framework

Set reference planes, dimensions and constraints in the Family Editor. Add type and instance parameters, name them clearly and test the framework before adding detailed geometry.

  3. 03

    Create geometry and controls

Build solid and void forms, assign material parameters and control visibility at different detail levels. Keep the geometry simple and connect it to the reference framework.

  4. 04

    Test and reuse the family

Create useful family types, add a simple formula and explore a nested component. Flex dimensions, load the family into a test project and resolve common constraint and placement problems.

  5. 05

    Establish template standards

Create a starter project template with units, object styles, lineweights, patterns and selected system-family types. Organise the Project Browser and introduce controlled transfer of project standards.

  6. 06

    Prepare views and schedules

Set up starter views, view templates and filters for consistent drawing output. Add a small set of reusable schedules and check how they behave when new model elements are added.

  7. 07

    Connect titleblocks and project information

Adapt a supplied titleblock and annotation content. Introduce shared parameters for a selected label or tag and test the information across the family, project and sheet.

  8. 08

    Validate and package your resources

Start a new project from the RTE template and test the RFA family, views, schedules and sheets. Review naming, version compatibility and unnecessary content, then organise the files for future use.
